Home is where the Ranch is

There are a few vacation destinations which transcend the mentality of the star rating system.  These places have managed to define their own ethos which, whilst in some ways are unconventional, will have guests cherishing the experience – and seeking to enjoy the same feelings again and again.

The Home Ranch requires either an airline flight to Denver, Colorado and then a four hour drive against the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains or a short drive after connecting to a flight into Steamboat Springs.

Ann & Steve Stranahan, originating from the East Coast fell in love with the idea of a Ranch destination for both them, their friends and guests and although initially unsuccessful in finding a property did find people with the authenticity and capability to manage such a venture.  The Stranahan’s solution was to find their own land and build an authentic ranch operation.

The Home Ranch today has grown to some 4,000 acres in size.  Guest accommodations are either in a central Ranch House or else at cabins which combine privacy with proximity to the ranch house where guests dine together all under the supervision of General Manager and Executive Chef, Clyde Nelson.

The core of the Home Ranch experience is activities – in summer led by horse riding, fly fishing and hiking.  Winter opens up possibilities for snow shoeing, cross country skiing or downhill activity either locally or else via a shuttle to bustling Steamboat Springs.

The uniqueness of the Home Ranch is how quickly guests are brought together on activities in either the morning or afternoon, all of which involve guidance by a member of the Ranch and then evening activities encompassing wine or spirits tastings, outdoor dinners, a band and to wrap up a week’s visit an outdoor cookout where the Head of Operations, Mike Moon, Ranch Operations Manager and his wife, who are accomplished country singers serenade one and all.

Dining is made enjoyable by the communal dining experience coupled with the excellent haute mountain cuisine provided by the kitchen.  One of the highlights of dinner is, after a days strenuous activity, having the Chef de Cuisine, Craig Singer comes out of the kitchen to address guests as to the preparations of the day.  The Ranch has a burgeoning garden operation contributing to the shortest transition from garden to kitchen to table – and another experience for guests to tour and speak and even participate with the garden staff.
